Blank pages printing out

Hi

We are currently using a licensed copy of v6.1.432.1 on a single web site running under IE8 on XP Pro machines. We only use the basic factory settings to disable the printing UI and print out 3 copies of a given page.

Users frequently experience blank pages being printed. This isn't related to the actual document being printed as retrying usually leads to a successful print - although this may take several attempts.  Clearing the cache appears to improve matters, although not enough users have tested this out for me to be certain. Given the intermittent nature of this problem and that our use of ScriptX is limited to a single site I'm pretty sure it's not a browser setting.

Are there any known issues around the version we have in use that can lead to this behaviour? If so, is there a solution or potential workaround?

Thanks.

Hi

Here's your issue

Update to an IE8-compatible build (which v6.1.432.1 most certainly is not, it dates from 2004 for heaven's sake!!) and test again.

Yeah, guessed that would be the standard answer. It still doesn't explain why the same page will fail a dozen times then print on the 13th. For dozen/13 substitute any other numbers.

HI

>>  It still doesn't explain <<

Of course it does. You've got a version of ScriptX deployed that 'knows' nothing about the version of IE it's running on, and with which it has (unsurprisingly) become more and more incompatible over time.

In such cases, inconsistency - as opposed to total success or total failure -  is *precisely* what you should expect.

There is an issue in IE8 whereby it will terminate an operation early and a blank page will print out. This occurs quite randomly - it might terminate early n times in a row and then be fine. n is a random integer between 0 and a PC related integer generally less than 20.

This issue is described and noted as fixed (aka worked around) on the ScriptX history (http://scriptx.meadroid.com/knowledge-bank/release-history.aspx) for version v6.5.439.50. In our Introduction to ScriptX (http://scriptx.meadroid.com/knowledge-bank/guide-for-client-side-printing/introduction.aspx) there is a table listing the required version of ScriptX for each version of Internet Explorer.

I appreciate that with Windows XP there is no choice, but where there is a choice, in my opinion it is better to avoid IE8 and go to IE9 or later.
